The process is a batch chlorination reaction using acetic acid as a solvent.

The simulation was used to study the control of reaction using acetic acid as reflux (thereby reducing its loss to scrubber).  The scrubbing of unreacted chlorine with caustic and recovery product HCl were other factors.

Results after the final implementation was well in line with the simulation study.
