Troubleshooting
Experience with
process design comes handy for troubleshooting. We can analyse the
bottlenecks, check if equipment can be pushed for higher capacity and
analyse the reasons why equipment fail to reach design capacity.
On the right, damaged
structural packing that severely reduced column performance. The
problem was traced to a defective steam control valve that was causing
spurts in flow causing a “hammering” effect.
We can conduct Hazard Operation (HAZOP) studies that systematically
questions every part of the process. Possibilities of deviations from
design intent are identified. Finally, an assessment is made if such
deviations can affect the safe and efficient operation of the plant.
If required, remedial measures (controls or safeties) would be added for
safe operation.
